Today's sermon about the raising of Lazarus can be a source of great consolation. Jesus demonstrates with Lazarus what he has declared to Martha: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die." (John 11:25,26) The raising of Lazarus is for us a sign and example that the life Jesus offers us extends past the grave.
Reading this passage alongside the preceding chapter only enriches our appreciation Jesus' promises: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand." (John 10:27,28 NIV). To be in a relationship of trust with Jesus means that we need not fear death or any disaster but that our present and our future are wrapped up in Jesus' good care.
Of course some people believe that church membership or baptism guarantees our present and future security. Others believe that it is an accumulation of good deeds that 'earn' us favor with God and a place in heaven. But today Scripture reminds us that it is a trusting relationship with the giver of life, that is the ultimate source of our security.
So do you know Jesus' voice? Do you trust in him?
If you do, his promises are worth remembering as you sit in the doctor's office waiting to hear test results, or head out on an icy road.
